Once you’ve chosen your track, you’re thrust into a colorful side-scroller action setting. Yet, as with any decent rhythm game, it’s fairly easy for anyone to get lost trying to “S”-tier a map. For beginners, the floor of entry for learning and enjoying the game is pretty low, given it’s only two controls. The simplicity of Muse Dash’s gameplay is very welcome. So if you like your rhythm games with some splashes of Miku, you’re in luck.) Welcome simplicity, overwhelming immensity Nothing particularly popular, but they’re all pretty good.

(Anyone who knows me well will ask, so: Yes, there’s some Vocaloid tracks. It’s a great selection of tunes that grants you a burst of energy as you hack and slash enemies. The chosen fare is a selection of typical “upbeat rhythm game” bops, with upbeat Asian pop, “nightcore,” Eurobeat and anything lively in-between. Of course, as a rhythm game, the required maneuvers are going to be in time with designated background music. When an “enemy” or threat of any kind reaches your character’s aim marker, you hit the corresponding key (J or K for ground-level attacks, F or D to jump-attack). Plus, with it being a handheld-first game, the mechanics are necessarily simple and easy to pick up. Everything from the gameplay to the high-frame rate, larger-than-life animated graphics seem like they’d be cozier on a mobile screen. The mobile-first intent is pretty obvious from the second you boot up the game. You’re cute, you’re hitting things to a beat, and everything’s really freaking colorful. I promise the aesthetic details don’t matter beyond that.

You play as an adorable “Heroine” to dash through a colorful world and take down enemies to upbeat music.
